Capital University
Conservatory of Music

recording studio at Capital University

People Love Music for Many Reasons —
at Capital,
We Turn Those Reasons Into Careers!

In the Conservatory, we’ve been working with students like you for nearly 100 years — and we’ve loved every minute of it!

Since 1919, we’ve been offering programs that prepare students for a wide variety of musical careers. Our graduates have gained recognition as professional performers, conductors, and teachers, while others have established careers in music business, technology, arts administration, and law.

The Faculty
You’ll be taught by the best professionals in the country. A list of our faculty members’ accomplishments reads like a “Who’s Who in Music,” whether found in our Music Technology, Music Education, or Performance divisions. In addition, you’ll learn through presentations, clinics and master classes with a multitude of world-renowned music industry specialists, performers, composers, and educators.

The Curriculum
Your classes will consist of a core of music studies essential to any music degree, classes specific to your chosen career path, a liberal arts core that will prepare you for the real world, and a number of electives to meet your desired educational goals. You and your colleagues can undertake residencies at unique locations like The Recording Workshop (Chillicothe, OH), Kodály Institute (Keskemet, Hungary), Hochschule für Musik–Carl Marie von Weber (Dresden, Germany), or other international opportunities, while others will student teach or take advantage of a real-world internship.

The Music
Hundreds of concerts and recitals are presented both on and off campus annually, including local, regional, national, and international conferences, competitions, and performance tours. The Conservatory Orchestra and string ensembles, bands, choirs, jazz groups, rock and electronic ensembles, studio ensembles, and chamber music of all kinds will present you with multiple performance opportunities. You’ll gain valuable experiences being challenged to perform to the best of your abilities and people will applaud your accomplishments.

The Facilities
The Conservatory provides a state-of-the-art environment for the study of music. Outstanding performance facilities with wonderful acoustical chambers include the 180-seat Huntington Recital Hall and the 900-seat historic Mees Auditorium, dedicated choral and instrumental rehearsal rooms, piano practice and chamber rooms, vocal and wind instrument practice rooms, audio recording and production studios and suites, an 18-station computer lab, an 18-station keyboard lab, and smart classrooms.

The Equipment
You’ll have at your fingertips the 4,000 pipes of the Hugus Memorial Pipe Organ, designed specifically for Mees Auditorium; more percussion instruments than even percussionists can shake a stick at; computers, MIDI instruments, microphones, mixing boards and effects units that any school would envy and every professional studio requires; electronic and acoustic keyboards to meet the needs of vocalists, instrumentalists, and pianist alike; and the wind, string and percussion instruments used to train the educators who will teach the future generations of musicians.

The City
Learning goes on everywhere around you — not just inside the classroom. The Greater Columbus region is alive with music and the arts, including the internationally acclaimed Columbus Jazz Orchestra, Columbus Symphony, Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, Opera Columbus, Lancaster Chorale, BalletMet and the Broadway Series, not to mention art museums, galleries, and arts and ethnic festivals — all just 10 minutes from campus.

The Result
Within our intimate classroom settings, where you’ll always be taught by a  faculty member — not a teaching assistant — we will know your name, your strengths, and how to help your reach the next level. You will be expected to ask questions. Our faculty will make you think . You will learn to lead , whether in the classroom, the world of music business, or wherever your career or next educational experience takes you. You will be prepared to take on the world!
