The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Music offers the best of both college worlds – the resources and academic prowess of a major research university of 18,000 students with the small liberal arts college faculty-to-student ratios of a vibrant Department of Music within the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Arts degree with concentrations in Music Technology, Music Education, and Applied Music, as well as the Master of Arts degree in Music Education. We collaborate with the Department of Theatre in their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre. All students auditioning as a Music Major or Minor are automatically eligible for all available music scholarships.
With a faculty of world-renown performers, scholars, and industry professionals, students in the department study and perform in state-of-the-art facilities including the Hulsey Center and the Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts, with two recital halls, a 1,400 seat concert hall, proscenium and black-box theatres, and a cutting-edge music technology lab and recording studio as the crucible for their artistic and intellectual growth.
An urban campus located in Birmingham’s historic Southside, UAB students enjoy a major metropolitan city with vibrant cultural life, award-winning restaurants, and a professional music scene that provides real-world experience for our students as they perfect their art, studying music in the context of the other fine arts, humanities, and social and natural sciences
