I don't believe a really important factor and tip has been mentioned yet in the article or comments. I'm an actively performing guitarist / singer and play multiple times a week. If I'm concerned I may lose my vocals during upcoming shows, I do what a lot of professional band performers do. I lower the key I'm singing in by a half step... sometimes as much as a whole step down. Doing so is typically not perceived by the audience, but it makes it a whole lot easier when you get to the high parts of the songs and majorly avoids straining your vocal cords. This works extremely well. Guitars can either be tuned down, &/or altered by use of a capo. And most modern electronic keyboards can automatically adjust pitches to accommodate vocals without the keyboardist having to change the way he/she is playing. And the drummers....well...they don't have to change anything other than to maybe play more quietly if need be, lol!

Great tips! And good practice too. Just goes to show even big screamin rock stars like to care for their voices.

First of all, you need to get to know your voice. Figure out your vocal range and try to identify where your vocal break occurs. These are the pitches where the voice of a new singer “flips” from one register to another. For some beginners, the voice may not “flip” but there is still some perceived difficulty to singing clearly without changing the character of the sound.

Try not to avoid the warm up. Begin at Middle C on the piano and gradually work your way all over the scale. Know your reach and its limits. When singing, your breathing ought to be profound, low, and supported. Raise your hard sense of taste with every breath to open the throat. Be beyond any doubt to drink heaps of water when you sing so that your vocal folds won't dry. - Stephanie Thompson

You’re correct in thinking that all the yelling and cheering can injure your voice. We encourage you to see a voice specialist to see if you’ve done any damage to your vocal chords already, and to find out ways of safely doing your job as squad captain so you can also sing. We also urge you to follow the tips in this article and also read articles like this one - about the value of silence for taking care of your voice, and this one - about dealing with throat tightness.
