I would add a few things to all these wonderful points: 1. Get the best instrument you can afford and keep it well-maintained (and professionally insured, such as by Clarion). Unfortunately, the price of instruments can be a true setback to the debt one carries.

2. Train in diverse styles: most of us won't be playing all those concertos we train on. But if applicable, learn to ornament; if applicable, study world music and learn to improvise, don't think of yourself just as a Classical musician: be an all-around musician first, and always.

3. Become a superb sight-reader. Most gigs as a sub come last-minute, with no rehearsals even, on often not well known repertoire.

4. Learn to play with others, no matter their approach. Subbing means fitting-in and keeping your fellow players in THEIR comfort zones.

5. Join professional societies (CMA, instrument societies, etc), interact, listen, build rapports, etc

I'm sure there's more, but thanks and congratulations to all!

Thanks for the tip that studying pieces that are usually found in auditions will help when trying to get into an orchestra. I guess that would be very useful for one of my cousins who is considering to find an online orchestra audition coaching service soon. He just got back to playing the cello after a bit of a hiatus so he has a lot of brushing up to do.
