Is AP Music Theory worthwhile? Is it a good idea to take the AP exam?
“Yes!” answers Joel Cliftt, director of Keyboard Studies at Azusa Pacific University and adjunct professor at USC Thornton School of Music. AP Music Theory “can make a dramatic positive difference,” he explains. “Students can end up testing out of the first year of college music theory if they are qualified. Testing out of first-level classes can allow more flexibility in your schedule, giving you more time to take electives, practice, or simply graduate on time. Even if you don’t choose to test out of classes, Theory I [in college] should be a breeze after taking an AP Music Theory course.”
