Have you considered talking with the band teacher and asking for help in designing a more intensive music experience for yourself? And what about finding a private teacher in the area who you can take lessons from? We suggest contacting the American String Teachers Association to see who may be available. We also suggest you look at opportunities to perform with local churches and other groups as well as to create an ensemble to perform with (and who a private teacher can work with from time to time).

I am a sophomore at Hanover College and love my school. I want to major in music and English. However, the music department in this school is not that strong but I do wonder if anybody has any suggestions on what I can do to make better the music program here. I play the cello yet there is no strings professor. I do not want to make the band director uncomfortable in any way and feel as if I do not appreciate him but I do want to be able to do more with my music major with a focus on the cello. I'm not great at the cello but I do enjoy playing peices that challenge me.
